Hyperbaric oxygen chambers can look a little like the futuristic cryo-chambers from your favorite science fiction movies. But they’re far from a sci-fi gimmick; hyperbaric chambers are real-world tools that can provide effective treatment for a variety of medical conditions.
At Sun Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, we are dedicated to providing you with the best resources and services to help you heal and stay healthy in all areas of your life. We offer innovative hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments at our facility, and we have already discussed the many benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in detail. Today, we will be looking into hyperbaric chambers themselves and how and why they work.
What is a hyperbaric oxygen chamber?
In the 2016 science-fiction romance film Passengers, two people awaken from induced cryogenic hibernation 90 years too early. The cryogenic chambers they emerge from do indeed look a bit like single-person hyperbaric oxygen chambers!
We’ve already stated that hyperbarics are very different from cryogenics. Unfortunately, your body will not enter an ageless hibernation in a hyperbaric chamber. Instead, you’ll spend 30 to 90 minutes laying on your back in a transparent chamber while breathing in 100% pure oxygen under high pressure. These chambers are designed to be comfortable, safe, and effective.
There are two types of hyperbaric chambers:
1. Multiplace chambers
As the name implies, multiplace chambers are rooms set up for multiple people to enjoy the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy simultaneously. Each person wears a sealed hood or mask to deliver pure oxygen to their lungs, and can typically bring in books or other forms of entertainment. Multiplace chambers allow for attendants to care for patients with or without breathing in pure oxygen themselves.
2. Monoplace chambers
At Sun Medical Center, we offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy with monoplace chambers. These are individual chambers that look a little like the cryo-chambers from Passengers, and they are designed to host one person at a time. Pure oxygen is pumped directly into the chamber, which is highly pressurized.
Both multiplace and monoplace chambers can be used for routine wound care, treatment of divers after decompression sickness, treatment of patients who are ventilated or in critical care, and supporting general body wellness.
What do you do inside a hyperbaric chamber?
Because pure oxygen is very flammable, many materials are restricted to reduce the risk of fire and keep hyperbaric chambers as safe as possible. You will not be permitted to bring battery-powered products into the chamber, so no browsing Instagram on your cell phone while you wait. Fortunately, many monoplace hyperbaric oxygen chambers, including ours at Sun Medical Center, provide a screen so that patients can watch TV or movies while receiving treatment. Some patients choose to bring a book, or simply close their eyes and relax or sleep.
No matter what you choose to do while inside the chamber, you will be passively receiving treatment to support your immune system and accelerate healing.
How do hyperbaric chambers promote healing?
As you breathe in 100% pure oxygen, your blood is richly oxygenated, and it carries this oxygen throughout every corner of your body to reduce inflammation and accelerate healing. The high pressure in the chamber also improves your circulation, increasing blood flow throughout your body and ensuring every tissue is saturated with the oxygen it needs to heal and stay healthy.
