What is a hyperbaric chamber?
Many people confuse hyperbaric chambers with cryo-chambers, which are designed to keep you youthful for many years while you’re in deep sleep. Unfortunately, when you schedule a session in a hyperbaric chamber, you won’t stay in a youthful state. Instead, your body will be exposed to 100-percent pure oxygen at a high pressure while you lay within a transparent chamber called a hyperbaric chamber.
What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
The process in which you are exposed to 100-percent pure oxygen is called hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Breathing in the oxygen will help to multiply the concentration of oxygen molecules within your body, specifically targeting any damaged tissue. Any time you have a wound or a cut, the tissue around the area becomes damaged. The high levels of oxygen and pressure will help to heal your wound faster than it would out in the open.
What are the different types of hyperbaric chambers?
There are two types of hyperbaric chambers — monoplace chambers and multiplace chambers. As you can imagine, monoplace chambers are designed to comfortably fit one person at a time. On the other hand, multiplace chambers are designed to host multiple people in which each person will wear a hood or a mask that will allow them to breathe in the pure oxygen.
What do I do while in the chamber?
Unfortunately, due to the oxygen-rich environment, you are not allowed to bring anything into the chamber with you except for a bottle of water. However, most HBOT rooms are equipped with entertainment systems that allow you to watch TV or movies while you’re in the chamber. Additionally, you may choose to listen to music through the speaker system or even take a well-deserved nap.
How long are the sessions?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a great solution for a variety of conditions, and the number of HBOT sessions depends on your condition. Typically, you will complete anywhere from 20 to 40 treatments of HBOT, and each treatment can last between an hour and a half to two hours. The length and number of treatments all depend on your condition, so it’s best to speak with your doctor and see what they recommend.
Are there any side effects?
The great thing about hyperbaric oxygen therapy is that when performed correctly by a trained technician, the treatment is extremely safe and effective. While there may be some side effects associated with HBOT, they are mild and minimal. Another benefit of HBOT is that once you are done with your treatment there is no recovery period and you don’t need to have anyone present to take you home. You will be able to resume your normal daily activities as soon as you are finished with your treatment.
How should I prepare for my treatment?
With hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the preparation for your treatment is minimal. Unlike with a surgical procedure, you are not required to fast, use special soap, or strip down into a hospital gown. Before you arrive for your HBOT treatment, we recommend that your hair and body are clean, as cleanliness is important to the procedure. Additionally, you will be required to wear simple medical scrubs, and you will need to remove any watches, prosthetics, and wigs, as they can interfere with the treatment. You will also be required to avoid smoking directly before and after your procedure. If you have any questions about medication or illness, please consult with your doctor at Sun Medical Center.
